Knowing BERO NGIMA

In the Luo language, Bero Ngima simply means “improving lives.” Since our founding in January 2022, this translation has served as both our name and our unwavering mandate. Founded by a dedicated coalition of young professionals, BERO NGIMA is a Community-Based Organization (CBO) built on a singular, urgent mission: to halt socio-economic decline and eradicate poverty across the communities of Lake Victoria’s Kavirondo Gulf, with a specialized focus on Obaria Beach.

Obaria Beach is a historic lakeside fishing settlement home to approximately 900 households and 4,000 residents. While the community is rich in resilience and spirit, it faces compounding systemic challenges—including severe poverty, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, and poor access to clean water and sanitation. With youth aged 15–35 making up more than half of the population, these barriers frequently manifest as substance abuse, teenage pregnancies, and child labor.

We exist to rewrite that narrative.

What We Do: Our Pillars of Impact

BERO NGIMA does not believe in temporary fixes; we believe in sustainable, community-driven interventions. We provide targeted support to those who are most frequently marginalized, including orphans, teenage mothers, child-headed families, and vulnerable youth. Our core initiatives span across several vital areas of intervention:

01.

Holistic Health & Well-being

We actively improve community access to clean water, reliable sanitation facilities, and essential healthcare, paired with critical psychosocial support to address trauma and gender-based violence.

02.

Education & Vocational Empowerment

We bridge the gap between poverty and opportunity by providing robust skills training, educational support, and pathways to sustainable livelihoods. We heavily promote youth entrepreneurship to build long-term economic independence.

03.

The BERO NGIMA Rescue Center

For those in immediate crisis, our dedicated Rescue Center serves as a secure, temporary shelter—a safe haven designed not just for refuge, but for complete life transformation.

04.

Environmental Stewardship

Because community health is directly tied to environmental health, we integrate active environmental conservation efforts into our daily community outreach.

Our Approach

Community Voices First

True transformation cannot be imported; it must be cultivated from within. That is why our Community Voices initiative is at the heart of everything we do. We ensure that local residents are not just beneficiaries of our programs, but active architects in the decision-making process. By listening to and collaborating with the people of Obaria Beach, we guarantee that our interventions are inclusive, culturally relevant, and highly sustainable. We aren’t just delivering aid—we are strengthening local capacities and building lasting resilience.
