Knowing BERO NGIMA
In the Luo language, Bero Ngima simply means “improving lives.” Since our founding in January 2022, this translation has served as both our name and our unwavering mandate. Founded by a dedicated coalition of young professionals, BERO NGIMA is a Community-Based Organization (CBO) built on a singular, urgent mission: to halt socio-economic decline and eradicate poverty across the communities of Lake Victoria’s Kavirondo Gulf, with a specialized focus on Obaria Beach.
Obaria Beach is a historic lakeside fishing settlement home to approximately 900 households and 4,000 residents. While the community is rich in resilience and spirit, it faces compounding systemic challenges—including severe poverty, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, and poor access to clean water and sanitation. With youth aged 15–35 making up more than half of the population, these barriers frequently manifest as substance abuse, teenage pregnancies, and child labor.
We exist to rewrite that narrative.
