Transforming Lives Through Sustainable Empowerment

BERO NGIMA empowers vulnerable youth in Obaria Beach through skills training, education, and pathways to sustainable livelihoods. We improve access to clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and psychosocial support while addressing key social challenges. Our programs promote environmental conservation, youth entrepreneurship, and vocational development, supported by a rescue center for shelter and transformation. Through Community Voices, residents shape inclusive solutions that build resilience and deliver lasting social and economic impact.

About Us

Improving Lives at Community Level

BERO NGIMA, meaning “improving lives” in Luo, is a Community-Based Organization (CBO) founded in January 2022 by young professionals committed to addressing the socio-economic decline and poverty faced by communities around Lake Victoria’s Kavirondo Gulf, particularly Obaria Beach. The organization aims to empower residents through targeted, sustainable, and community-driven interventions.

Obaria Beach is a lakeside fishing settlement with approximately 900 households and a population of 4,000, of whom over half are youth aged 15–35 years. The community faces challenges including poverty, unemployment, poor access to clean water, inadequate sanitation, limited healthcare, substance abuse, teenage pregnancies, child labour, prostitution, and high morbidity rates.

Our Vision

To create an equitable, healthy, and empowered society where all individuals have access to essential services, opportunities for personal and economic growth, and live in dignity within sustainable and inclusive communities.

Our Mission

To address socio-economic inequalities and enhance quality of life by improving access to essential services, promoting education and skills development, fostering health and well-being, advocating for sustainable and inclusive policies, and empowering individuals to build resilient, productive, and self-reliant communities

What We Do

Our Programs

Comprehensive, integrated interventions designed to break cycles of poverty and build sustainable livelihoods

Access to Clean Water

Waterborne diseases keep children out of school and limit economic growth. Through community-led water treatment, household purification, and vital hygiene education, we are bringing safe, reliable drinking water to the 4,000 residents of Obaria Beach.

Hygiene & Sanitation

Clean water is only half the equation. To truly protect public health in Obaria Beach, we are building inclusive sanitation infrastructure, driving comprehensive waste management, and leading high-impact hygiene campaigns. From constructing safe, accessible latrines to championing menstrual hygiene in local schools, we are eradicating preventable diseases and restoring human dignity for our most vulnerable residents.

Healthcare Services

In isolated settlements like Obaria Beach, basic healthcare is often entirely out of reach. We are dismantling these geographic and economic barriers. Through our dedicated community clinic, free medical outreach camps, and vital immunization drives, Bero Ngima CBO brings life-saving care directly to the families who need it most. We are committed to reducing maternal mortality and treating preventable diseases long before they become emergencies.

Drugs & Substance Abuse

High unemployment is the primary driver of substance abuse in Obaria Beach. Bero Ngima goes beyond traditional rehabilitation by tackling the root cause: idleness and poverty. We combine vital clinical detox, psycho-social counseling, and family support with direct job creation in local agribusiness, regulated sand mining, and fishing. We are not just helping youth recover; we are giving them the economic foundation to thrive.

Teenage Pregnancy Prevention

When a young girl is forced out of the classroom due to early motherhood, the cycle of generational poverty deepens. Bero Ngima CBO is committed to keeping girls in school by tackling the root causes of teenage pregnancy. Through comprehensive reproductive health education, the eradication of period poverty, and vital psychosocial support, we empower young women to make informed decisions and secure their educational futures.

Child Protection & Gender-Based Support

Abuse and exploitation are not private matters; they are human rights violations that fracture the entire community. Bero Ngima CBO operates with a zero-tolerance policy for violence against women and children. From active rescue and trauma counseling to ensuring victims are safely reintegrated into schools and vocational programs, we are building a secure, vigilant Obaria Beach where our most vulnerable residents are fiercely protected.
